History of TeamSlowMotion:
It all started one night at the Southern Sun
(a brewpub in Boulder Colorado) which by the way is the quintessential way to start
any team. We had all talked about starting a small team before but that night was
different. When I say different I mean there must have been two or three more pitchers
of beer than usual. Later that night we posted a quick website to get things started.
The original intent was to make up some jerseys with “Team DFL” on them which stands
for “Dead [Censored] Last”, a common term used in racing. After a little research
it turned out that Team DFL is already a real cycling team where DFL stands for
something else. Thus we changed the team name to “Team [Insert Name Here]”. We sent
out a couple of emails and got a whole slew of team name ideas and then let everyone
vote on them. The vote was a landslide victory for TeamSlowMotion which got more
votes than all the other names combined.
Then almost as quickly as TeamSlowMotion began, it collapsed. I’m sure all the historians
will have their own opinions on what happened but I think everyone’s motivation
had fizzled. During this hibernation phase of TeamSlowMotion we had acquired the
domain name www.TeamSlowMotion.com. Someone else owned the domain name at the time
everyone voted for it. When we finally acquired the domain several months after
the hostile takeover, things had already hit the dormant state for the team. Since
we had the domain name we thought we might as well put up a website.
A couple of people kept asking about doing jerseys for TeamSlowMotion almost a year
after the entire thing began. We thought about it for a while and then came up with
the idea of using a tricycle as the logo. We search the internet for a good picture
and then realized it would be easier to buy a tricycle and take pictures of it.
After a vicious bidding war on eBay we acquired the perfect tricycle for the job,
a 1950’s Colson Tricycle. We then made a quick prototype of the jersey and sent
out an email to see if anyone was still interested. The minimum order was 25 and
there was limited time to get all the artwork done. We didn’t think we would make
the minimum and didn’t have the time, skills or software to finish the jersey artwork
so we pulled the plug. As a consolation to the jersey, and to actually get some
use out of the tricycle, we had some t-shirts made. While this did bring some new
life back into the team, it quickly collapsed again.
Again, a couple of people kept asking about doing a jersey almost a year later after
the t-shirts. They were happy with just getting the prototype already designed.
Also someone had emailed us about a company with a minimum order of five. After
doing some higher math, four people really wanted the jersey plus one more would
make five which is the minimum order. We sent another email out to see who might
be interested in getting a jersey thinking we would at least get that one person
we needed for a minimums. We were a little overwhelmed by the response and ended
up with an order of 46 items instead of the five we were looking for.
What’s next for TeamSlowMotion? The plan is to do the Winter Park Series, Mountain
States Cup Series and a few other races/events.
